St. Mary’s uses its 340B savings to subsidize the loss it incurs providing behavioral services to residents of central Maine and beyond. In 2024 St. Mary’s had 1,632 patient admitted to its inpatient behavioral unit from across 15 of the 16 Maine counties. In addition, there were 4,238 visits to its emergency department designed specifically for behavioral patients. The payor mix associated with this service line is 84% governmental of which 54% is covered by MaineCare, 3% uninsured and 13% commercial. St. Mary’s is privileged to be able to care for this vulnerable population but without the benefits derived from the 340B program the level of service that could be provided would be impacted.
